New technologies such as cloud computing and social networking are increasingly penetrating our lives. Social networking sites like Facebook have now over a billion users, and Twitter is getting close to two hundred million users generating what we now call “Big Data”. On the other hand, in the past few years smart phones started to dominate the IT market, with the number of smart phone sales exceeding the PC sales. This shows a paradigm shift of how people interact with each other and how the digital traces of people are processed. Current discussions regarding privacy and data protection are around these new technologies and consequently EU is revising its data protection framework in response to the changing IT landscape. In the light of all these developments, the aim of this conference is to create a platform to discuss the future of data privacy. The conference has a local and global agenda, since Turkey is about to adopt a data protection legal framework, and a strong public support is needed to speed the process while EU is revising its data protection framework. In this regard the conference sessions will be on cloud computing, big data, privacy by design, social media and the future EU framework and its effect on Turkey.
